Persepolis
------------------------ I have watched recently a cartoon movie entitled “ Persepolis”. It’s based on a novel entitled “ Marjane Satrapi” which is the name of our heroine and its an autobiography The movie is in French with English subtitles; its length is about an hour and half. The movie depends on the flash back technique where of course the “now moment” is colored while the “past moment” is played in black and white. The movie talks about the life of a Persian girl. From her early years till her early twenties and the effect of the ups and downs of politics and of the Persian society on her own personal life and her thoughts. In a very clever display and very attractive drawings the movie takes you to a very different culture than hours yet tangible in certain areas with our social situation nowadays. Through the life of our heroine, her family we can sense that they are a liberal family living through the Islamic Revolution in Iran. The movie displays the Iran- Iraq war and the accusation finger is pointed to the two sides not leaning towards one over the other, through the idea of how precious the human soul it is. In a very cunning way we follow a part of the Persian modern history through the life of Marjane. The contradictions inside her own self, her very special relation with God that no one can understand it. The movie discussed in a subtle way some ideas like the Islamic/ Iranian point of view towards alcohols, women’s veil, women’s love relations and the complicated relation between love and sex. One of the most amazing relations in this movie is the relation of Marjane with her grandmother. How warm and friendly. How open minded and understanding. The strength of this woman was always conveyed to our heroine even in her darkest moments. In the movie, After the Iranian revolution and the movement of the Shah out side the countries, the Islamic wave flushes all the freedom and it is displayed in the movie in many ways, such as: the police members whom their only job in the streets to see if the woman is wearing the veil in the “right” way or not. To catch any un married couple walking together or even riding the same car. They haunted all the licker serving parties or mixed parties. And for that Marjane parents decided to send her abroad to learn and live freely. Marjane who was not devastated by the death of her Liberal/ secularist uncle in the prison was totally destroyed when her French lover betrayed her. I won’t talk about any details. Cause you’ve to see this movie by yourself. May be my only negative comment that if this movie wasn’t an animation it could have been a stronger one. Also, I think that every revolution has its good consequences like the bad ones, but the movie didn’t mention a single good thing. HEART, we will forget him! You and I, to-night! You may forget the warmth he gave, I will forget the light. When you have done, pray tell me, That I my thoughts may dim; Haste! lest while you’re lagging, I may remember him! Samar...I actually read the novel a couple of years ago..and I must say I LOOVEEDDD it..I studied it actually. It would be interesting to watch the movie, especially that some of the themes(e.g. love and sex) are not that clear in the novel. But the book is a piece of art. Some of the pictures in it(it is not a novel novel..illustrations like comic books) are extremelly powerful and the juxtaposition between some of them people partying and others dying in the adjacent pages was extremelly powerful and intriguing.
------------------------ about the resolution...I am not sure if the movie is based on the first part only or both...but there are two parts of the novel and that might explain the lack of a resolution in the end. yomna
